Radish has many health and nutritional benefits. It is a low carb vegetable, a good source of Vitamin C, Phosphorous and Zinc. Many do not like radishes because of the pungent smell. But with this dish you will see how to mask that smell and have something truly nutritious and delicious! This Poriyal can be served with Rasam Rice.
Ingredients:
White Radish – 250 Gms (Peeled and finely chopped)
Oil – 2 tbsp
Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
Urad Dal – 1 tsp
Medium Sized Onion – 1 (finely chopped)
Curry Leaves – from 1 twig
Grated Ginger – ½ tsp
Turmeric Powder – 1/8 tsp
Salt – to taste
For spice Powder:
Dried whole Red Chillies – 3
Channa Dal – 2 tsp
Urad Dal – 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds – ½ tsp
Garlic Pods – 1 to 2
Method:
Let us make the spice powder first. Heat a pan. Add Red Chilli, Channa Dal, Urad Dal, Cumin Seeds and Garlic Pod to a hot pan. Dry roast all of them in low flame till the lentil turn golden brown. Allow them to cool. Powder them to a coarse powder. Keep aside.
Heat the Oil in a pan. Add Mustard Seed and Urad Dal and allow the Mustard to splutter. Add Onions, Curry leaves and grated Ginger. Sauté till the Onion starts changing the color. Add finely chopped Radish, Turmeric Powder and Salt. Mix all of them well.
Cover the pan with a lid. Cook in low flame till the vegetables become tender. If the Radish does not become tender, sprinkle some water and simmer.
Add the spice powder. Stir very well. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to a serving bowl.
