Avalakki Oggarane is a very tasty Poha recipe of Karnataka region. It is generally prepared with Poha of thick variety. It is a breakfast dish. It is very simple and quick to make recipe.
Ingredients:
Thick Poha (Avalakki/Aval/Rice Flakes) – 2 cups
Oil – 2 tbsp
Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
Urad Dal (skinned Black Gram) – 1 tbsp
Chana Dal (Bengal Gram) – 1 tbsp
Peanuts – 2 tbsp
Green Chilli – 2 (finely chopped)
Onion – 1 (finely chopped)
Carrot (Grated) – ¼ cup
Grated Coconut – 1/8 cup
Grated Jaggery – 1 tbsp
Finely Chopped Coriander Leaves – 2 tbsp
Lemon Juice – 2 tsp
Salt – to taste
Method:
Wash the Poha well in a colander. Let it sit in the colander for about 10 minutes. The Poha will become soft during this time.
Meanwhile, heat the Oil in a broad pan. Add the Mustard seeds.
When they crackle, add Urad Dal, Chana Dal and Peanuts.
When the Dal turns golden, add the Curry leaves, Green Chillies, Onion and a pinch of Salt. Stir cook them till the Onion turn soft.
Add the grated Carrot and cook till the Carrot becomes soft.
Add the grated coconut, stir for a minute.
Add the Jaggery and cook till it melts.
Add the soaked soft Poha and Salt.
Mix well. Stir cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Sprinkle 2 to 3 tbsp of water, mix well, close with a lid and continue cooking for 4 to 5 minutes in low to medium flame.
Open the lid and give a quick stir. Switch off the flame. Optionally, you can add 1 tsp of Lemon Juice and mix.
Serve this tasty Avalakki Oggarane as a breakfast or evening snack.
