Nutty Cluster Beans Curry/Gawar Masala

Nutty Cluster Beans Curry/Gawar Masala

Dishes made with Gawar (Cluster Beans) are always tasty. It is one of my favorite vegetables. This vegetable is very good for Diabetics control and that is why the Tamil name Seeni Avarakkai (Sugar Beans).

Ingredients:

Cluster Beans – 250 Gms

Salt – 1 pinch

For Tempering:

Oil – 2 tbsp

Cumin Seeds – ½ tsp

Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp

Curry Leaves – from 1 twig

For Masala Mix:

Coriander Seed Powder – 1 tbsp

Red Chilli Powder – 1 tsp

Grated Coconut – 1/3 cup

Roasted and coarsely crushed Pea Nuts – 1/3 cup

Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp

Dry Mango Powder – ½ tsp

Jaggery (Gur/Sugar) – ½ tsp

Salt to taste

Method:

Break off the tip and base of the Cluster Beans and discard. Wash the Cluster Beans and break them into one inch long pieces. (Do not use knife to cut Cluster Beans, It will turn bitter). Take them in a pressure cooker and add a pinch of Salt and 2 to 3 tbsp of water. Cook them in the pressure cooker for 1 to 2 whistles. Remove the cooker from the stove and allow it to cool. The Cluster beans should have been cooked soft.

Heat the Oil in a pan. Add Mustard and Cumin Seeds and allow them to crackle. Add Curry Leaves and stir for few seconds.

Add the cooked Cluster Beans.

In the meanwhile, take all the ingredients under the “For Masala Mix” in a bowl. Combine them well.

Add the Masala mix which we prepared.

Mix well and cook them for 4 to 5 minutes.

Transfer to a serving bowl.

Serve with Roti, Chappati, Rice etc.
