Garlic Dal is an easy and quick to prepare recipe. It can be served as a soup or can be served with rice or any Indian bread like Roti, Naan etc.
Ingredients:
Pigeon Peas (skinned and split) /Tur Dal– ½ cup
Ghee (Clarified Butter)- 2tsp
Turmeric (Haldi) Powder – ¼ tsp
Cumin Seed (Jeera)- ½ tsp
Garlic (Finely Chopped ) -1 tbsp ( Do not use Garlic Paste)
Whole Red Chilies – 3
Chilli Powder-1/2 tsp
Asafoetida /Hing – 2 pinches
Cialntro Leaves (finely chopped) – for garnishing
Salt – to taste
Preparation:
Wash and rinse the dal.
Add 1½ cup of water and turmeric powder and pressure cook for 8 to 9 whistles. (Else for 3 whistles and simmer for 10 minutes)
Release the steam carefully and transfer the dal to a pan.
Add salt and ¼ tsp of chilli powder.
Add little water to adjust the consistency and cook for 5 minutes (The Dal is likely to become thick in consistency after a few minutes, so adjust water accordingly).
Transfer to a bowl.
Heat ghee in a frying pan, add cumin seeds. When it crackles, add whole red chilli. Stir for 30 seconds.
Add garlic.
Cook for a minute and then add ¼ tsp of chilli powder and asafoetida.
Stir for 15 seconds and then add the dal to this pan. Cook for 5 minutes or until the raw flavor goes away.
Garnish with cilantro leaves.
