This Upma is a South Indian Breakfast Recipe – a healthy and flavorful dish. You can serve this Upma with any pickle of your choice. Chutney and Sambar are also a good combination for this Upma.
Ingredients:
Broken Wheat (Wheat Rava) – 1cup
Oil – ½ tsp
Ghee – 1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
Black Gram – 1 tsp
Peanuts – 1 tbsp
Onion -1 (finely chopped)
Green Chilli – 1 or 2 (finely chopped)
Curry Leaves – from 1 twig
Grated Ginger 0 1 tsp
Tomato – 1 (finely chopped)
Salt to taste
Water – 2 to 2 ¼ cups
Method
Heat ½ tsp of Oil in a pan and roast the Wheat Rava in it for 2 to 3 minutes in medium flame. Keep it aside.
Heat 1 tbsp of Ghee in the same pan. Add Mustard Seeds and allow them to crackle. Add Black Gram and Peanuts. Roast them for a minute in low flame.
Add the Chopped Onions, Green Chilli, Ginger and Curry Leaves. Sauté them for 2 minutes.
Add chopped tomatoes and saute till soft.
Add 2 to 2 ¼ cups of water and bring them to a boil in high flame.
When it starts boiling, reduce the flame. Add Roasted Wheat Rava stirring continuously so that the lumps do not form.
Cover with a lid and simmer for 10 to 12 minutes in medium flame stirring in between till the water evaporates completely.
Transfer to a serving bowl. Serve with Chutney or Sambar or Pickles.
Notes:
You can add ½ cup of mixed vegetables like Carrots, Beans, Peas and Potatoes. Add vegetables (except Tomato) after frying the Onion. Sauté them for 2 to 3 minutes and then add the Potato. Follow the rest of procedure as above.
The roasted broken wheat Rava can also be pressure cooked with water and Salt for 2 to 3 whistles in medium flame if you are in a hurry.
The water quantity for this Upma is 1:2 ¼ depending on the quality of the wheat Rava.
