Raw Banana can be used to make very tasty dishes like Vazhakkai Poriyal, Vazhakkai Puttu, Vazhakkai Podimas, Stir Fried Banana etc. This Vazhakkai Varuval is another one dish using Raw Banana. It goes very well with Sambar Rice, Rasam Rice, Dahi Rice etc.
Ingredients:
To mix with Banana Slices
Red Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
Coriander Seed Powder – 1 tsp
Cumin Seed Powder – ½ tsp
Amchur Powder (Dry Mango Powder) – ¼ tsp
Turmeric Powder – 1 pinch
Ginger Garlic Paste – ½ tsp
Rice Flour – 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Other Ingredients:
Raw Banana – 2
Oil – 1tbsp + 1 tbsp
Cumin Seeds – ½ tsp
Curry Leaves – from 1 twig
Method
Rinse the Raw Banana. Peel the thin outer skin only.
Slice them into medium thick rounds and immerse them in a bowl of water with ¼ tsp of Salt. This will help Bananas from darkening.
Boil 3 cups of water and ¼ tsp of Salt in a vessel. When the water come to a boil, remove the Banana Slices from the salted water and drop to this boiling water. Boil for one or two minutes till the Bananas are done, but remains stiff.
Strain the water. Allow the Banana Slices to cool down and attain room temperature. Transfer to a mixing bowl.
Add all the ingredients given under “to mix with the Banana Slices” and mix then gently.
All the slices should be coated evenly with the spices.
Heat 1 tbsp of Oil in a broad pan. Add Cumin Seeds and Curry Leaves. When the Cumin Seeds start crackling, add the coated Banana Slices and spread them in a single layer.
Cook them in low to medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes. Flip all the pieces and continue cooking for another 2 to 3 minutes. Continue cooking by flipping in between.
Sprinkle the remaining 1 tbsp of Oil now and then. Cook till the Bananas are well cooked, but retain its crispness. Do not allow them to burn.
Serve hot!
