Simple Dal Fry

Simple Dal Fry

Dal Fry is usually prepared with Tur Dal (Pigeon Pea Lentil/Yellow Dal). You can also use Masoor Dal or Moong Dal. This recipe is a very simple and quick to make recipe. Dal Tadka or Dal Fry is a popular Dal preparation in the restaurants.

Ingredients

Tur Dal (Pigeon Pea Lentil) – ½ cup

Water – ½ cup

Turmeric Powder – one pinch

Other Ingredients:

Oil or Ghee – 1 tbsp

Mustard Seed – ½ tsp

Cumin Seed – 1 tsp

Curry Leaves – from1 twig

Green Chilli – 2 (finely chopped)

Garlic Pods – 2 (crushed)

Onion – 1 (finely chopped)

Asafoetida – 2 pinch

Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp

Lemon Juice – ½ tsp

Water – 1 to 1 ½ cup or as required

Salt to taste

Cilantro (Dhania Leaves0 – 1 tbsp

Method

Wash and rinse the Dal. Add 1 ½ cup of water and Turmeric Powder.

Pressure cook it for 6 to 8 minutes till the Dal becomes soft.  Mash the cooked Dal lightly with a whisk or a ladle. Keep aside.

Heat the Oil or Ghee in a pan. Add Mustard Seeds and allow them to crackle. Add the Cumin Seeds and Red Chilli. Fry them.

Add Onion, Green Chilli, and Curry Leaves and fry them till the Onion becomes light brown. Add the Asafoetida.

Stir well.

Add the mashed Dal and required water, Salt and Turmeric Powder. Stir and simmer for 4 to 5 minutes till you get a smooth consistency.

Add Dhania Leaves and the Lemon Juice.

Stir well.

Serve with Rotis or Nan or Jeera Rice or plain Steamed Rice.
