My mother used to make a raw onion tomato chutney along with the usual Coconut Chutney for Idli, Dosa etc. It is a very easy to make Chutney and tastes good with Idli, Dosa etc. Since my daughters are love chutney rather than the usual coconut chutney, I make this chutney very often at home.
Ingredients:
To grind:
Medium Sized Onion – 2 (chopped)
Tomatoes – 2 (chopped)
Red Chilli Powder – ¾ tsp (or less as per preference)
Tamarind – small goose berry size.
Garlic Pods – 2
Salt – to suit taste
For Tempering:
Oil – 1 tsp
Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
Curry Leaves – from 1 twig
Asafoetida – 1 pinch
Method:
Grind all the ingredients under the “To Grind” column in a mixture jar to a fine paste without adding any water. Transfer to a serving bowl.
Heat the Oil in a small pan. Add Mustard Seeds and allow them to crackle. Add Curry leaves, Stir for 3 or 4 seconds. Add Asafoetida and transfer the tempering to the Chutney immediately.
Serve with crispy hot dosa or fluffy idlis!
Note:
Use a medium sized mixture jar to grind the chutney or hold the lid tightly while grinding as the chutney may spill out.
