Kollu Podi is a very healthy powder and it is very tasty as well. Win-Win! It goes well with Idli, Dosa and steamed Rice. We know the health benefits of Horse Gram. It helps in losing unnecessary weight, asthma and bronchitis. It cleans the bowel system and helps in digestion. We can make many recipe with this healthy Kollu (Horse Gram) such as Rasam, Sundal, Kollu Dal, Chutney etc.
What we will see here is the method to make the tasty Kollu Podi. It tastes very good with Idli. Generally we mix Coconut or Gingelly Oil to any Podi served with Idli or Dosa. But Kollu Pod does not need any Oil to be added to it. Kollu Podi stays good for 2 to 3 months even in room temperature.
Ingredients:
Horse Gram – 1 cup
Urad Dal (Black or white) – 1 cup
Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
Garlic – 6 (chopped)
Curry Leaves – from 4 twigs
Sliced Dry Coconut – 3 tbsp
Red Chillies – 6
Red Chilli Powder – 1 ½ tsp
Asafoetida – ½ tsp
Jaggery – as required to suit taste
Oil – ¼ tsp
Method:
Dry roasts the Horse Gram till you get a nice aroma of the roasted Gram. Transfer to a plate or a dish.
Dry roast the Urad Dal till it turns light brown. Add the Cumin Seeds to it and stir fry for 30 to 40 seconds. Transfer to a plate or a dish.
Roast the Curry Leaves and chopped Garlic till the Curry leaves turns crispy. Add dry Coconut and roast for few seconds. Transfer to a separate dish.
Add the Oil to the pan and roast the Red Chillies. ( Roast the Chilli in the Oil to avoid pungent smell of the Chillies while roasting.)
When everything cools down, grind the Dals along with Red Chilli Powder, Salt and Asafoetida for a minute. Now, add the roasted Curry Leaves, Garlic, roasted Coconut, Red Chillies and Jaggery to them. Grind them together to a slightly coarse powder.
Allow it to cool for some time.
Transfer to a clean sir tight container for storing. Use the required quantity whenever you want. It can stay good for 2 to 3 months.

Adjust the spiciness depending on your taste.
