Payaru Thoran is a popular dish from the Kerala region. It is served as a side dish with Ari Kanji (Rice Porridge). It is a very healthy and tasty dish as the Beans and Green Grams used to make this dish have lot many health benefits. It helps in lowering blood Sugar, helps to lose weight, controls Cholesterol and improves skin health. Payaru Thoran can also be served as a side dish with steamed rice. We can serve it as a main dish for breakfast.
Ingredients:
Green Grams (Pasi Paruppu/ Moong Beans) – ½ cup (washed and soaked in water for 10 to 12 hours)
Coconut Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds – ¾ tsp
Finely chopped Shallots – ½ cup
Garlic – 4 pods (crushed)
Green Chillies – 2 (finely chopped)
Curry Leaves – from 1 sprig
Grated Coconut – 1/3 cup
Turmeric Powder – 1/8 tsp
Chilli Flakes – ½ tsp
Salt – to suit one’s taste
Method:
Drain the water from the soaked Moong Beans. Take it in a vessel. Add ¼ tsp of Salt and sprinkle 3 to 4 tbsp of water. Mix well. Cook it in a pressure cooker for 2 to 3 whistles in medium flame till the Moong is cooked well, not mushy. After the steam is released fully, open the lid and take out the cooked Moong.
Heat the Oil in a pan. Add Mustard Seeds and allow them to splutter. Add the chopped Onion, Green Chillies, Curry Leaves and the Garlic. Sauté those till the onions turn translucent.
Add the grated Coconut, Turmeric Powder, Salt and Chilli Flakes. Mix them well. Stir cook for 2 to 3 minutes in low flame.
Add the cooked Moong Beans.
Mix well and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes covered with a lid. Transfer to a serving bowl.
Serve with rice porridge or as side dish Sambar Rice, Theeyal Rice etc.
