Idli is the most popular breakfast dish in the southern parts of India. Of course, it has now spread over to all the regions of India. If you want to have a variation from the routine Idli, you can make this Chilli Idli with IndoChinese flavor. It is a very quick and easy dish to make.
Ingredients:
Idlis – 8 (You can use fresh or left over ones- cut them into 4 pieces)
Oil – 2 tbsp + 1 tbsp
Garlic – 5 pods (finely chopped)
Finely chopped Ginger – 1tsp
Green Chili – 1 (chopped into ½ inch long pieces)
Onion (Medium sized) – 1 (quartered and separated into petals.
Bell Pepper (cubed) – ½ cup
Greens of Spring Onion – 2 tbsp
Tomato Sauce – 2 tbsp
Red Chilli Sauce – 2 tsp
Corn Flour – 2 tsp
Dark Soya Sauce – ½ tsp
Salt to taste
Vinegar – ½ tsp (I used Apple Cider Vinegar)
Method:
Heat 2 tbsp of Oil in a broad pan. Roast the Idli pieces till you get crusty outer layer. Keep aside.
In the same pan, heat 1 tbsp of Oil. Add the chopped Ginger and Garlic. Stir fry them for a few seconds.
Add the chopped Green Chilli and Onion. Stir cook for a minute.
Add Capsicum and sauté in medium flame for 3 minutes.
Add Chilli Sauce, Soya Sauce, Vinegar, Tomato Sauce and the Onion Greens. (Keep aside a little of the Greens for garnishing later). Mix well.
Add the toasted Idli Pieces and Salt. Stir them for a few seconds.
Take 2 tsp of Corn Flour in a small bowl and add 3 to 4 tbsp of water. Mix well and add to the Idlis in the pan.
Stir continuously for 2 to 3 minutes in low to medium flame.
Transfer to a serving bowl. Garnish with the Onion Greens.
Serve hot with a cup of coffee or tea.
Note:
You can deep fry the Idlis and use for this dish.
